Well Dressing

Ault Hucknall 3rd Saturday of July 2.30pm Service followed by Blessing of Wells. This ancient rite prays that the wells will not run dry in the high summer. This is a community art form with origins in pre-Christian times and is unique to Derbyshire. Large pictures and designs are made from natural materials on a wet clay surface. Derbyshire is famous for its pottery clay which is abundant for the well dressers' purpose.

The well at Ault Hucknall (and at the Villages of Rowthorne and Glapwell) remain on display for 8 days. The money offerings put in the boxes beside each well are given to local charities.

At this service, all the names of the departed are recalled, but by name, all those whose funerals have taken place in the time since the last service 12 months earlier. Other names of departed loved ones are also remembered by request.

We are giving thanks for the lives of loved ones and their achievements, seeking comfort in our grief, and proclaiming a Loving God who in Christ has shown He has the measure of death through  His victory on the Cross.
