Glapwell Educational Charity - This young charity has a constant hand to mouth fundraising effort The Charity was first registered with the Charity Commissioners in September 1989. Charity Commissioners Number 701993 It was founded largely by the efforts of the previous Vicar of St John the Baptist’s Church along with other villagers of Glapwell civil parish to support young people in further and higher education. This was in the days before the enormous debts being incurred by students in the early 21st Century. The area of benefit is the civil parish of Glapwell. In Ault Hucknall, the other civil parish within the Ecclesiastical parish of St John the Baptist, the Hardwick Charity is much better endowed from the historic assets given by the Dukes of Devonshire. For some mysterious reason, when the Glapwell civil parish was formed, the area of benefit for these older charities was not included. The Reverend Kenneth Wayne sought to compensate Glapwell students accordingly. The main source of income was planned to be the promotion of giving donations in lieu of flowers by bereaved families. As most clergy realize enormous sums are spent on funeral flowers for so little long term benefit. Glapwell families have frequently supported the charity in this way, and most families know a member who has benefited. Sadly, the assets are not great, and unlike its Ault Hucknall neighbouring charities, this young charity has a constant hand to mouth fundraising effort to support the demands made upon it. Enquiries by applicants should be made in writing by the end of April and the end of September to: The Secretary The trustees meet in early May and early October to make awards. Donations should be made to the same address
